World Gold-Panning
Championships (May).
Derived from the Polish word złoto , meaning gold, the town’s
name reflects the fact that the gold-rich sands of the River Kaczawa, which
flows through Złotoryja, have been exploited since the Early Middle Ages. Even
today gold-seekers flock to contests organized by the local gold-panning
association.
Features of interest in Złotoryja include the Gothic Church of St
Mary (Kościół NMP), which has a 13th-century presbytery, and the
remains of the town walls.
The volcanic Wilcza Góra Geological Park , also known as
Wilkołak, lies 2 km (11/4 miles) south of Złotoryja. Unusual basalt formations
known as “basalt roses” can be seen in the western part of the park.
