Running inland from Norman Manley Boulevard and covering some 9 sq miles (24 sq km), the Great Morass is Jamaica’s second-largest wetland. It can be accessed by bus or route taxi from Negril to Savanna-la-Mar, but is a long walk away from the nearest stop. It is best to take a chartered taxi.
The Great Morass is a peaty, reed-covered expanse that provides a habitat to a number of rare animals and plants, including the many trees around which the Royal Palm Reserve has been created. With wooden boardwalks that lead right out onto the morass, the air alive with the chirping of crickets, cicadas, frogs, and with every inch of surface covered in thick greenery, it is a great place for a walk. Also a good spot for bird-watching, the reserve has a couple of observation towers and more than 50 species of birds to look out for. Visitors can try their luck at fishing as well.
