Villanueva’s old town, which centres on the graceful Neo-Classical Plaza Mayor, is one of the most attractive in La Mancha. Many buildings on the square have wooden balconies and arcades. Also on the square is the Iglesia de San Andrés , which has a Renaissance façade. Inside are a Baroque altarpiece and organ, as well as the now empty tomb of the Golden Age author Francisco de Quevedo. He lived and died in the Convento de los Domínicos .
The village of San Carlos del Valle , 25 km (15 miles) to the northwest, has an 18th-century square and galleried houses of rust-red stone.
